Recognizing fertile days with the menstrual cycle

Do you know what influence your menstrual cycle has on your fertility? Lots of them, of course! The chances of getting pregnant change depending on which phase of your cycle you are in. Here you can find out everything you need to know about your cycle phases to increase your chances of getting pregnant.

Why the menstrual cycle is the key to fertility

If you want to get pregnant, knowing about your menstrual cycle is the first important step. Because you are only fertile on a few days a month. If you understand your cycle, you can use your fertile days more effectively and thus increase your chances of getting pregnant.

The 4 phases of the menstrual cycle

The cycle consists of 4 phases and lasts an average of 28 days, but can vary between 21 and 35 days.

Menstruation (day 1-5)

The new cycle begins on the first day of your period. The lining of the uterus is shed – this is the bleeding you know as menstruation.

Follicular phase (day 6-14)

The eggs mature during this phase. The body prepares for ovulation by increasing oestrogen. The lining of the uterus builds up again.

Ovulation (approx. day 14)

Now the mature egg cell is released. It is capable of fertilization for about 12 to 24 hours. Sperm can survive for up to five days – so your fertile phase starts a few days before ovulation.

Luteal phase (day 15-28)

After ovulation, the body produces more progesterone. If the egg is not fertilized, the hormone level drops – and the next period begins.

How do you recognize your fertile days?

The most fertile days are the 5 days before ovulation and therefore usually the day of ovulation, depending on the length of your cycle. You can recognize them in different ways:

  • Observe cervical mucus: Becomes clear, spinnable and proteinaceous, a sign of high fertility.
  • Measure basal body temperature: The body temperature rises slightly after ovulation.
  • LH tests (ovulation tests): These measure the increase in luteinizing hormone (pituitary hormone) shortly before ovulation.
  • App tracking: Cycle apps help to predict your fertile days – even better in combination with symptoms.

How regular should your cycle be?

A regular cycle makes forecasting easier, but is not a must. Even with slight fluctuations, fertile days can be determined with a little observation. It is important that you get to know your body well and get a feel for your cycle phases.

Tip for your desire to have children

You can use an ovulation test or sensor test with app evaluation, e.g. Trackle , to get a precise overview of your cycle phase. For example, the regular determination of the hCG value helps you to determine your ovulation even more reliably. To rule out possible health factors, you should also consult your doctor of choice. Here you can also discuss a possible sperm quality test together.

And above all, don’t put yourself under pressure. A conscious approach to your cycle is the first step towards your dream child – your body will take care of the rest. We’ve summarized why it’s so important to avoid stress in our article Stress reduction – the desire to have children with peace of mind.
